Cappuccino at home with a Stovetop Brewer

by Luka 30 Oct 2020
If you're spending time at home, you'll want to brew delicious coffee! The good news is that you don't need expensive equipment to make great coffee. As you'll see in the video below, you can brew incredible coffee with a Stovetop Brewer (or Moka Pot). The stovetop brewer is compact, cheap and very simple to use. And it only needs a stove to work! In the video we show you how to make black coffee, and with a few tricks we also show you how to make a cafe-quality cappuccino! Watch the video, then read the notes below.

How to brew with the Stovetop

Fill water to the safety valve as seen in the video. The only real pro-tip is to use pre-boiled water. By doing so it will reduce the time that your ground coffee is being affected by heat before actually brewing. When coffee is hot but not brewing it is a sure fire way to kill flavour. Avoid it at all costs. Next, put ground coffee in the basket. This brewer works great with pre ground coffee, and even better if you can grind the coffee yourself just before you need it. Don't tamp the coffee, just lightly settle it to ensure the basket is full. Place the cone shaped basket in the base and screw on the top section using a tea towel to hold the base as it will be hot! Place the brewer on the stove on medium-high heat and in under 2 minutes you’ll be drinking a delicious full flavoured coffee. Stove Top coffee is a great way to experience coffee. It's not espresso strength, nor filter strength. It doesn't have the texture of espresso but it's not light like filter brewing. It really is it's own thing - its stovetop! Much loved by people around the world.

How to make a Stovetop Cappuccino

What’s better than a black stovetop coffee? Well not much, but a really nice way to enjoy stovetop is to heat milk in a saucepan and add it to the coffee. By adding hot milk to the stovetop coffee you can make a wonderful cappuccino right at home. When you place the stovetop on the stove, heat milk in a small saucepan. Place the burner on medium to high and stir slowly. When the milk bubbles it's ready to add to your coffee.

Pro-tip for heating milk

As seen in the video above, if you have a french press (or plunger), you can make that milk silky and beautifully textured, just like a cafe-made cappuccino. By raising and lowering the plunging mechanism (see video), you can make a really decent micro-foam. It's the stuff that'll make your local barista think they have to raise their game! After the milk has doubled in size through plunging, place the milk into a milk pitcher and pour it into your coffee. You can even make latte art patterns! Have fun brewing at home. Dom ...
